The Ultimate Stereogram Workshop Guide

Stereogram Workshop: Create Your Own Hidden 3D Images is a dedicated software application developed by Sandy Knoll Software that allows users to design custom “Magic Eye” style autostereograms. These are flat, 2D images that reveal a hidden three-dimensional illusion when viewed by uncoupling or decoupling your vision. The software is available for multiple desktop operating systems, including a 64-bit version optimized for macOS via the Apple Mac App Store. Key Features of the Software

Hidden Image Stereograms: Generates classic 3D illusions embedded into repeating background patterns.

Built-in Depthmap Creation: Features integrated “rubber stamp” shape tools (like circles, squares, triangles) and text elements to build custom grayscale depth maps.

Texture Creation Tool: Includes a generator to build random-dot textures using up to 6 custom colors or structured fractal patterns.

Floating Object Stereograms: Allows users to layer standalone clipart silhouettes that appear to hover over a background pattern.

Bundled Assets: Package includes pre-made sample depth maps, repeating textures, overlays, and clipart to help beginners get started immediately. How the Process Works

To create a standard hidden stereogram, the software uses two foundational components:

The Depth Map: A grayscale template where white represents areas closest to the viewer, black represents the flat background, and gray values create smooth transitional curves.

The Texture/Pattern: A horizontally repeating design—either random dots or an abstract graphic—that acts as the visual camouflage.

The program processes these layers by microscopically distorting the pattern horizontally based on the gray levels of the depth map. When a person looks “through” the finished image, their brain links the displaced matching dots, translating the patterns into physical depth.
